CHAPTER THIRTEEN

A Beautiful Noise

“It's a beautiful noise / It's got rhythm to spare.

Made of joy and of strife / Like a symphony played.”

Neil Diamond

We soon would come to love the sound of helicopters. On our first day at the Mayo Clinic, we began to hear what would soon become a beautiful noise to our ears. Just outside of Teresa's hospital room, a helicopter landed gracefully on the heliport, a mere hundred yards from her room. Just like in the movies, two surgeons ran to the helicopter from the hospital, the wind from the propellers radically blowing as they embarked and flew off to procure the organs donated by a generous person who had just lost their life. We prayed for their soul and for their families. Then within an hour or two, the sounds returned—at first faint—then gradually beginning to get louder and louder. The helicopter landed and an intern ran to the helicopter and removed a red and white cooler carrying a life-giving organ into the hospital where a blessed individual had been prepped and readied for surgery.

How we longed for that day, very soon we hoped and believed. Every time we hear a helicopter since, it gives us chills and transports us back to that time and place. Patience and perseverance are said to be a virtues but waiting has never been one of our favorite pastimes. And here we were, waiting again. It really did take a village to allow our kids to do so well with us three thousand miles away. Sarah gave us all a scare that week when she put one of her signature soccer moves on a defender only to be tripped from behind sustaining a concussion, leaving her with migraine headaches, nausea and dizziness. A visit to Emergency and a CT scan thankfully confirmed no swelling or internal bleeding. Just needed to refrain from any sports for a week. Two weeks prior, I had taken our daughter Nicole to the doctors as she had a bout with the Swine Flu and Pneumonia, with high fever and respiratory problems, having to miss a week of work. She was a trooper and soon returned back to school and work. The normal day-to-day challenges of life continued and did not stop to wait for us.

Looking back in retrospect, I marvel at how the prayers, blessings and encouragement from so many people helped to keep our family afloat in so many unbelievable ways. When I gave
